La fin de semaine dernière, je suis allée au New Hampshire avec des amis pour skater le fameux skateparc intérieur RYE AIRFIELD.
Oui, 7h de char aller le samedi, 7 h de char revenir de dimanche pour skater un skateparc intérieur. …Pis mets-en que ça valait le détour! Pis oui, elle était bonne, la bière le samedi!

Last weekend, I went on a roadtrip to New Hampshire with my friends to skate RYE AIRFIELD, an indoor skatepark.
Yes, a 7h roadtrip to skate an indoor skatepark for a weekend. And yes, it was worth it!

On est arrivé à Rye le samedi à 14h. Un p’tit pit stop chez Pioneers, le skateshop local, et à 15h, on entrait dans le parc pour 2 sessions de 3h, non-stop!
Honnêtement, la section street est vraiment plate… Fak j’ai passé 6h de temps à tourner en rond dans le gros bowl (5 pieds de shallow, 10 pieds dans le deep)! Ma seule préoccupation pendant ces 6h de temps, c’était de toucher aux tuiles en carvant backside et frontside back-to-back, chose que j’ai réussi à faire quelques minutes avant la fin de la deuxième session! Malheureusement, il y a une chose que je n’ai pas eu le guts d’essayer cette soirée-là… Roll-in dans le p’tit bowl! Parce que j’avais trop peur haha, alors j’ai remis ça à demain comme une vraie matante.
À 21h, on sortait du skateparc. Une halte à l’hotel, et on est allé souper à Portsmouth Brewery avec nos amis d’Ottawaw qui étaient à Rye aussi! C’était vraiment AWESOME (l’expression locale, c’est malade à quel point tout est AWESOME à Rye! Haha) Ensuite, DODO!

We arrived at Rye on saturday around 14h. Before going to the skatepark, we stopped by Pioneers, a local skateshop, and at 15h, we had our helmets on and were ready for 2 three-hour sessions in a row.
Honestly, I was really disapointed by the street section, which turned out to be good because I skated the big bowl (5 ft shallow and 10 ft deep) for the whole 6 hours! My goal was to touch the tiles backside and frontside,  which I managed to do about 10 minutes before the park closed! Unfortunately, that took all my time and I didn’t achive my second goal, to learn how to Roll-in! I postponed that goal to tomorrow’s session.
At 9h PM, we left the park, took showers at our hotel and went out to eat and drink at Portsmouth Brewery! It was AWESOME!

Le lendemain, avant de retourner au parc, on a décidé d’aller voir le bowl extérieur à Rye. Finalement, il faisait tellement beau qu’on a skaté dehors en février pendant une demi-heure!! Juste pour ça, ça valait tellement le détour!
Ensuite, tant qu’à y être, on a fait un petit arrêt à la plage, juste pour le kick! Le seul problème, c’est qui faisait frette en titi sue le bord de l’eau!

The next morning, before going back to Rye airfield, we went to Rye’s local outdoor skatepark because Steve at Pioneers told us they had a brand new bowl. We ended up skating that bowl for 30 minutes! Skating outside in february, check!
Then, since we were really close to the shore, we stopped by the « beach », just for fun. It was super cold though!

Après la « beach », le boulot! J’avais encore mes roll-ins à apprendre, moi! En plus, ce matin-là, j’me suis réveillé avec nulle autre que la toune « Rolling in the deep » d’Adele dans la tête…j’ai ben pensé que c’t'ai un signe! Hahaha. La première affaire que j’ai fait en arrivant dans le parc…roll in in the shalloooowwwww, ensuite, j,ai tourné en rond autour du p’tit bowl, pour finalement, après une vingtaine de minutes, ROLL IN IN THE DEEEEEEEEEPPPP YAHOOO! Haha ensuite, j’ai au une super bonne session. J’ai également rencontré Nora Vasconcellos, une habituée de Rye. Quand je dis habituée, j’veux dire qu’elle fait des backside ollie de 6 pieds de haut dans le Vert de 14 pieds…!! (J’étais vraiment impressionnée!)

À 15h, on sortait du parc. Avant de partir, une Dogfish head dans le stationnement, pis une pointe de pizza pour la route. 
Bref, moi, le superbowl, je l’ai passé dans l’bowl à Rye.

Then, back to reality. I had three hours to learn (or to overcome fear) to roll-in. That morning, I woke up with Adele’s song « Rolling in the deep », so I thought it was a sign, I had to do it! First thing I did when I got in the park, I rolled-in in the smallest section of the smallest bowl…YEAH! Then I roleld around the small bowl and ROOLLEEEDD INNN THHEEE DEEEEPPP (a 5 ft deep, but it’s better than nothing! Haha)
Oh and I have to say, I also met Nora Vasconcellos, apparently she’s a local skater at Rye…and by « apparently », i m,ean…she can backside ollie 6 feet over the coping of the 14 ft vert…so yeah, I was really impressed!!!

At 3h PM, we left the park. A Dogfish head in the parking and a slice of pizza for the road.
All this to say that I spent my superbowl weekend skating Rye’s bowl.

Même au risque de sonner comme une vieille matante, j’me lance: « HEIN? PAS DÉJÀ 10 ANS?  MAUDIT QUE ÇA PASSE VITE!!! »… J’ai même envie de citer les boys de Father Skateboards (RIP) en ajoutant « 10 ans, qui l’aurait cru? »

En 2002, bien avant l’ère de Facebook, Twitter et Youtube, je mettais en ligne la première version de notre site web sur lequel on diffusait nos nouvelles, nos photos, nos vidéos et avec lequel on espérait faire des rencontres virtuelles.  2002, c’est aussi l’année de naissance d’Exposé Magazine grâce auquel on a (entre-autres) fait la connaissance d’Éloïse. Enfin 2002, c’est la première année qu’on passait au square Berri, inspirées par le Island Crew, à filmer ce qui allait devenir notre première production: « Boy Vidéo ».

Il en a coulé de l’eau sous les ponts depuis cette époque là! J’pourrais vous écrire 45 pages de texte afin d’illustrer nos 10 ans de vie en long et en large mais je préfère laisser ces quelques photos parler d’elles-même.  C’est d’ailleurs avec grande fierté (et un brin de nostalgie) que j’ai parcouru nos archives afin de partager quelques moments clés de notre histoire…

At the risk of sounding old, I must say: « 10 YEARS? WHAT? ALREADY? TIME GOES BY SO FAST!!! »…  It even makes me want to quote the guys from Father Skateboard (RIP) « 10 years, who would have guessed? »

In 2002, way before the Facebook, Twitter and Youtube era, I was putting up our first website that contained news, photos and videos.  Back then, we were hoping that it could help us virtually meet new people.  2002 was also the year that Exposé Magazine was born. Amongs other things, Exposé gave us the chance to meet with Éloïse.   Inspired by the Island Crew, we spent the summer of 2002 filming at Square Berri for our first video production called « Boy Vidéo ».

A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then! I could write 45 pages about our story but I prefer to let the pictures do the talking. It’s with great pride (and a bit of nostalgia) that I went through our archives to share a few key moments of our history…

If you haven’t heard or Projet 45, the first DIY skatepark project in Quebec province, it’s about time I tell you about it!  Just check out this video, I think it shows how much heart is thrown in the project…  And do I really need to mention that it’s all volunteer work and that no one gets paid?
