Last February, while UQAM students were in a “half semester rush”, Anne-Sophie Julien (communication student) was in Punta de Mita. She then decided to interview Julie Lévesque (organizer in charge of the logistic) to tell her about the Skirtboarders Mexico Tour. After what she used the footage to proove to her teachers that even if she was far away, she found the time to make a short and interesting documentary. Congratulations Anne-Sophie, we are very proud of your work! Your video editing is simply amazing!

After running for their flight and missing it, Anne-Sophie, Annie, Brigitte, Éloïse, Frédérique & Margaux took a shuttle to their hotel. Is it me or our Montreal shuttles are never this funky?

Thanks to Paloma Guerrero for making such a complete article and to Alejandro Pai for taking so many great pictures!

The Skirtboarders left a very good impression on us. They travelled from Canada to Mexico to enjoy two weeks of sun and skate, and to give mexican skateboarders the pleasure to watch a demo for the first time ever, of pro female skateboarders.

The best legacy of the tour is the inspiration they gave to the mexican skater girls. Since mid 2005, the female skate scene in Mexico has been growing very fast, and with no doubt it’ll keep on growing. Much more with the visit of the Skirtboarders. The tour was a very important encouragement for all the skater girls in our country, and for those who are eager to learn to skate.

The Skirtboarders crew was formed in 2002 with the idea of skateboarding, taking photos, filming and sharing a good laugh with a good dinner and beer -as they say. Mathilde Pigeon, skater and film director, has been at the centre of the female skate scene in Quebec since the beggining, with her camera. Her film ‘Skirtboarders Le Film’ is the first canadian girls skate film, released in 2007. The link of Skirtboarders with Mexico is Renata Ruiz, mexican Skirtboarder who lives in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The Skirtboarders demos in Mexico were full of energy, adrenaline and fun. Every one of the Skirtboarders has a unique style and particularities: Êloïse Théorêt (Rugged Riders, Palm Isle), 100% street rider, showed 360 flips, boardslides, fs boardslides, nose manuals and k-grinds; Annie Guglia (Circa, RUgged Riders) had fun either on rails or banks with kickflips and heelflips and showed a heavy bag of tricks on trannys, everything revert. Frédérique Luyet (Dickies Girl), killed every transition with alleyoops, layback lipslides, reverts, frontside hurricane, backside disasters… style! Margaux Walker (Nikita, Nixon), born in Switzerland, didn’t lose glamour not even when doing 5050s, fs noseblunt disaster and laybacks. Anne-Sophie Julien (Volcom) standed out with her panama and her casper flips -her signature trick- and casper flip to pogo. Renata Ruiz (Té Verde), pulled stylish boneless, 5050s, 5050 sex change, 5-0 to tailslide. All in all, the performance of the Skirtboarders, either on trannys or street, was awesome.

Julie Lévesque, Briggite Emond, Louise Hénault-Èthier and Rébecca Fillion are also part of the crew. Rébecca’s five months pregnancy wasn’t an obstacle for her to throw a frontside air on a miniramp at the Mexico City demo… impressive! Mathilde Pigeon filmed everything while the photographer Martin Gagnon was doing his job.

The Skirtboarders Mexico Tour began on February 17 in Mexico City at La Fuente Sk8park (Fountain sk8park). There was a female contest which was judged by the Skirtboarders, and after that they dedicated only to have fun on the demo they gave. They invited the mexican skater girls to join the demo and skate all together.

THe winners:
Begginers
1. Melody Reséndiz
2. Mariana Muñóz
3. Brenda Magaña
4. Fernanda Castillo
5. Mariana Sevilla

Advanced
1. Andrea Sánchez
2. Estefanía Gómez
3. Adriana Calahorra
4. Daffne Piña
5. Constance Gómez

The recently opened Zapotlanejo Sk8park (no translation for Zapotlanejo!) was the next stop of the tour. The sun and the heat is really heavy on this part of my country, but that wasn’t a problem for the Skirtboarders, who made the day of many kids who didn’t attended school just to go and watch the canadian girls rip! They also signed autographs and gave interviews for local tv channels.

The next stop was los bowls de Zapopan (Zapopan Bowls) where there was also a female contest won by Blanca Contreras and Florencia. The tour ended on February 22 at Aguascalientes Sk8park (again, no translation. Aguascalientes is the name of a town… but wait a minute, there is a translation… it means ‘Hot waters’… that’s for real). In Aguascalientes there was also another female contest -won by Pamela Anaya- and the Skirtboarders destroyed the park, specially when Renata challenged Éloïse to do a fs boardslide on a big rail if Renata landed a boneless transfer. They both nailed the tricks, which was an amazing ending of the tour.

The Skirtboarders Mexico Tour was possible thanks to the organization and logistics of Te Verde Producciones and the sponsorship of Heat Co. Chica Rider, 4Twenty Store, Insane, Vans, Diarrhea, Tecnic, Fluye, Chakota, Destructible and Comudaj Zapopan.
